Frequently Asked Questions

How much does it cost to attend a TALKS session?

Attendance is $5. This amount helps Harmon Park cover overhead costs. Remaining overhead costs are paid out of the Park’s general fund. The Park is a nonprofit entity, under The Odyssey Center, a 501(c)3 charity. Donations to The Odyssey Center and Harmon Park are deductible and 100% of donations go directly towards services (donation money is never used to pay for advertising or salaries). Are teachers paid?

No. TALKS is a knowledge and skill sharing program. We want the events to be as accessible as possible to anyone who is interested in attending. In order to pay instructors, we would have to charge much higher prices for attendance which would mean that many potentially interested people may not be able to afford to participate. We do, however, reward those who teach by covering their attendance fees to other TALKS for a full year following their event!

What if I want to teach a class, but I'm nervous, I've never taught before, & I don't know how to put a lesson together. Is there help?

Yes! Someone with lesson planning and teaching experience (usually this will be Loren Harmon) will be there to guide you through planning and preparing your lesson. When the event date comes around, she (or, another experienced educator) will be there to co-facilitate the event. You will not be expected to "perform" or to be a 'perfect' teacher- these events are meant to be informal, relaxed, and enjoyable! Everyone should be able to come as they are and feel welcomed. Mistakes and unexpected twists are part of the fun and we can all laugh at ourselves together!

Is advanced registration required to attend a TALKS event?

Not usually. Classes do have participation limits which will vary depending on the subject matter and class structure. Advanced registration is always advised to reserve space in the class desired. Some classes may have supply requirements that need to be settled in advance of the event date, thus making advanced registration necessary. For events without required advanced registration, walk-in attendees are welcome as long as space permits.

What about supplies for art, craft, and 'make-&-take' classes?

Some TALKS events, like art classes, craft tutorials, and make-&-take sessions will require supplies of various kinds. The $5 attendance fee will not cover these items. TALKS which will have supply requirements will include the necessary explanations and costs in the event descriptions and participants who register in advance will be made fully aware of all supply requirements and related costs during registration. Some of events may not allow for unregistered participation due to supply requirements.
