Kingfishers & Allies (Coraciiformes)
The 10 families of Coraciiformes contain around 210 species. Members of the order occur globally except in the extreme north. Ranging in size from 4 inches to 4 feet, they are hole-nesting birds; many with long, pointed bills and blue or green in plumage. They are mostly carnivorous, except for the hornbills, which eat mostly fruit. Only one species, the Belted kingfisher (representing the Megaceryle alcyon family) is found in the area of Harmon Park, and specimens have been seen within a 15 mile radius of the Park.
On this page you will find only the families and species which may be observed in and around the area of the Park. Species which have been verifiably observed on the grounds of the Park are indicated with this symbol:
