Woodpeckers & Allies (Piciformes)

Birds within the order Piciformes are very small and have short legs and tiny, scaleless, feet. Within  6 families, the order includes around 400 to 450 species. Woodpeckers (the Picidae family) make up over half of the species in the family. Piciformes are found on all continents except Australia and Antarctica, but only the woodpeckers are widespread outside of the tropics. The piciformes vary widely in size with the smallest, the rufous piculet (Sasia abnormis), only a few inches long and the largest, the toco toucan (Ramphastos toco), measuring two feet or more. There shapes and features are also widely varied.
