Salamanders (Caudata)

The order Caudata (the Salamanders and Newts) represents about 9% of all amphibians, with around 816 known species (the numbers change often as endangered species become extinct and new species are discovered) sorted into 10 families. Sixteen species of salamander within five families may be found in the central Alabama region where Columbiana and Harmon Park are situated. The habitat range for a seventeenth species in a fifth family (the Alabama Waterdog, Necturus alabamensis) includes our area as well, however, it is endangered and extremely rare, and no sightings have been reported in the area.
